Support for LGBTIQ

Older Australians of various orientations and gender identities should have access to aged care services that are sensitive and respectful of their unique needs. These services need to take into account their personal history and any past experiences of discrimination or marginalization.

Due to their experiences of discrimination and lack of recognition of their needs by service providers, individuals who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and/or intersex (LGBTI) have been recognized as having unique requirements for aged care.

The Australian Aged Care system is transforming to better accommodate the diverse needs of individuals, ensuring that quality and dignified care is provided whether in their own homes or in residential facilities.

Unfortunately, many older Australians who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and/or intersex (LGBTI) have faced discrimination and marginalization throughout their lives. They must have access to Aged Care services that are not only respectful of their unique care requirements but also sensitive to their personal histories.

Unique Needs

The government’s Aged Care program acknowledges the unique needs of LGBTI older Australians and is dedicated to enhancing their Aged Care experience to ensure they have equal opportunities as all Australians.

Various initiatives have been implemented to better address the Aged Care requirements of individuals who identify as LGBTI, providing support that is considerate and inclusive of their needs, as well as those of their families and caregivers.

What topics should I cover when speaking with potential aged care providers?

When considering a move to an aged care facility, the 10 Questions to Ask brochure can serve as a valuable tool. This resource offers a comprehensive list of inquiries designed to assist individuals of varying orientations and gender identities, including those who identify as LGBTI, in finding a suitable provider. The questions contained within the brochure have been carefully crafted by medical professionals, nurses, and other experts with extensive experience in the field of aged care.”

Accessing Services

If you are an older Australian who identifies as LGBTI and requires additional support, it is important to undergo a formal assessment by your local Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT). This assessment can be scheduled through the My Aged Care website or by contacting 1800 200 422.

It is up to you whether you choose to disclose your LGBTI identity to the ACAT assessor. If you do decide to share this information, rest assured that your privacy and confidentiality will be respected. The assessor will collaborate with you to create a personalized support plan and assist you in locating a provider in your community that aligns with your needs.

Upon being deemed eligible for support, the ‘service finder tool’ on the government’s My Aged Care website can aid you in identifying and comparing Aged Care providers in your vicinity. For specific types of Aged Care, such as personal and social care, this tool can be utilized to pinpoint providers specializing in services tailored to individuals who identify as LGBTI.
